Materials for making carving knives and chisels

For making carving knives and chisels, we usually use the best quality tool steel because its ability to hold a cutting edge and its high ductility. A hardness of HRC 45-50 on the Rockwell scale allows the perfect working of wood types available in our area. This is greatly surpassed in terms cutting edge holding ability and hardness by high speed steel which costs several times more than tool steel. Its forging, heat treatment and working is much more delicate, but anyone who has worked with such a tool, will always want to work with it.

It beats the most famous english and german chisels. Unfortunately V-shaped chisels or gouges cannot be forged from this, but straight and curved profile chisels are possible. For forming wood in the lathe, after trying spring steel, we tried knives made from bearing housing. That steel type has high molybdenium content and abrasion-resistance and it turned out to be the best suited for the purpose. I also tried a 25000 Ft high speed steel knife which was maybe a little bit better. Unfortunately I couldn't come by a high speed steel of this size to make a knife from it. I provide opportunities for anyone to test the edge holding and splintering abilities of the tools, they have passed even the most critical tests sofar. I make the handles of the tools from hornbeam and on the tools that need it, I also apply a light taper bush. We also make etching tools and carving tools for making woodcuts and linocuts on demand. You can purchase mallets from us, made from hornbeam, too and on demand we can rubberize the used surface which makes it more durable and hit softer, protecting the elbow and wrist. We can also help with whetting tools, mops, polishing pastes and other tools.
