Even in my parents' time, it was customary that a suitor presented a very ornately elaborated mallet called "sulyok" to his fiancée, proving his manual skills and the sulyok with its deep-carved ornaments came in handy in washing clothes in the river. Graduates in the Székely Land even nowadays graduate with a haversack hanged on a 20x20x450 mm kopjafa on their shoulders, containing salt and pogácsa. The Székely gate and the kopjafa should deserve a chapter on their own. I was infected by the love of wood carving at the age of 16. My knowledge in metalworking allowed me to try out the most diverse materials, profiles, heat treatment and whetting techniques. Since I've been teaching wood carving since I was 18, and the acquisition of good quality tools have always been difficult for the students, I tried to satisfy these emerging demands.
Now this isn't my main activity anymore, but I can still meet the demands of the highest quality. At the moment we have several hundreds of carving knives and chisels of different profiles, but should we miss any profile or size, we'll get it in no time. |
